Affogato

The name affogato, meaning “drowned” in Italian, refers to creamy vanilla gelato topped with a shot of hot espresso just before serving. The contrast of cold, velvety gelato and bold, aromatic coffee creates an effortless dessert that feels both sophisticated and indulgent. For an extra-special finish, garnish with shaved chocolate, crushed biscotti, or a splash of coffee liqueur.

Directions

  1. Prepare the Dessert Glasses: Place four small dessert glasses or bowls in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before serving to help keep the gelato cold.

  2. Brew the Espresso: Prepare four fresh shots of espresso just before serving. The espresso should be hot and freshly brewed to create the signature contrast with the frozen gelato.

  3. Scoop the Gelato: Place two small scoops of vanilla gelato into each chilled dessert glass.

  4. Assemble the Affogato: Pour one shot of hot espresso over each serving of gelato. If desired, add a splash of coffee liqueur for an adult version.

  5. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with shaved dark chocolate, crushed amaretti cookies or biscotti, and garnish with a chocolate-covered espresso bean, if desired.
