Classic Marinara Sauce

Directions

  1. Sauté the Aromatics: Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened and translucent. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

  2. Add the Tomatoes and Seasonings: Pour in the tomatoes with their juices, crushing them gently with a spoon or potato masher for a rustic texture. Stir in the salt, pepper, oregano, red pepper flakes, and sugar if using.

  3. Simmer the Sauce: Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer uncovered for 30–45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors deepen.

  4. Finish with Fresh Herbs: Stir in the basil and parsley during the last few minutes of cooking. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt or pepper as needed.

  5. Blend if Desired: For a smoother marinara sauce, blend carefully with an immersion blender until your desired consistency is reached. Pair with shorter tube pastas like rigatoni or penne.
